- Chris Taylor Vice Chair Chris Taylor’s love for nature, education and technology provides a solid foundation to support many fields. He enjoys working with diverse needs and collaborating across many cultural sections. While studying Sustainable Technology at the University of Hawaii Maui College he founded the Sustainability Club and served as president of the Peace Club. In addition to running his computer repair business Chris enjoys surfing, hiking and preserving Maui’s natural resources.
- Karen Chun Secretary has a masters degree in Engineering specializing in Energy Systems from University of California. She has published papers on solar energy and natural cooling. She’s been active in both water and Hawaiian rights issues. As an outrigger canoe paddler, she is passionate about ocean access and water quality and has been active in working to resolve problems with waste water injection wells. She acts as webmaster for the Maui Group Sierra Club Website.
Recently she lead efforts to prevent misuse of Maui water including problems with the planned commercial use of the Waihe’e groundwater for export and use of the Hamakuapoko Wells for human consumption.
- Michael Duberstein Treasurer began a weekly maintenance kuleana at Kihei Boat Ramp/South Maui Heritage Trail; that blossomed into Rotary Club of Kihei-Wailea membership, then to research for the Superferry trial team which led to the Maui Tomorrow Foundation Board, to Treasurer of Akaku Maui Community Television, and Democratic Party District Eleven (South Maui) Chair. All of this stems from a Kihei Community Association meeting where Lis and Bob Richardson described their work at the Boat Ramp and Trail. He enrolled in a Hawaiian culture and language course and learned what “malama aina” and “pono” represent in the broadest terms.

- Dottie Binder is retired and has lived on Maui for over 9 years in Kula. She got involved in Party Politics because she was concerned about the direction our country was going. Dottie is the Vice Chair of the Democratic Party and Upcountry Member of the Democratic State Central Committee. She lives on 3 acres off Haleakala Hwy and enjoys gardening and is concerned about the environment and political problems facing our country right now. She believes in taking care of people and the Earth.
- Lucienne De Naie Lucienne de Naie is a long time Club member who has served as Chair and Vice-chair of the Sierra Club Hawaii Chapter Executive Committee. She is a researcher and writer whose passion is protection of native plants, streams, watersheds and cultural sites.
- Daniel Grantham has served on Maui Sierra Club board for 12 years, in a number of positions, including Chair. His years videotaping community and government meetings for public access TV has given him some familiarity with Maui issues. His science studies and electro-mechanical work background have fueled his interest in the practical and technical aspects of renewable energy and sustainability. Nature, he believes, illustrates the importance of decentralization to robust and resilient life support systems.
- Janet Six As a long time resident of Maui (since 1978) I have seen the island change over time – firsthand. In
1995, I received an AA from UH Maui Community College. In 2010, I received my Ph.D. in Anthropology
from the University of Pennsylvania. My dissertation research focused on the archaeology of sugar
plantations in general and the control of water (hydrological despotism) in particular. Since returning
to Maui in 2004, I have been actively working on several cultural/ecosystem restorations on Maui
including: the reconstruction of Lo`iloa in Iao Valley under the direction of Kawehwehi Pundyke; heading
up the archaeological excavation at the sacred and political site of Moku`ula in L?haina with UH-MC
and NYU; helping UH-MC administration on the eventual conveyance and reforestation efforts of
the P?lauea Cultural Preserve in Wailea; and working with Hnu Energy and Ulumalu Energy, LLC on
the installation of 4,236 solar panels on private land above Pe`ahi (ground breaking this October).
Additionally, I am the writer and co-producer of the documentary film Ho`okele Wa`a: Turning the
Canoe – Navigating a Sustainable Future for Maui which won the Audience Award for Best Film made
in Hawai`i at the 2010 Maui Film Festival. I currently serve on the Steering Committee on UH-MC’s
Sustainable Living Institute of Maui (SLIM) and am employed as a lecturer in Anthropology.
